The City of Cordoba is the capital city of the Province. This place was originally inhabited by the Romans, however, it became more famous as a hub for the Moors. Cordoba happened to be the western capital of the Islamic empire during the tenth century. Up to this day, the Moorish occupancy remains evident with the Moorish structures that still exist in the city. One of the ancient impressive Moorish structures is the Great Mosque or Mezquita which happens to be one of the largest places of worship for the Islam worldwide. The construction of the Great Mosque of Cordoba began between 784 A.D. and 786 A.D., during the reign of Abd al-Rahman I who ran away from Syria to the Iberian Peninsula after his family was massacred by a rival political dynasty.
During the 13 th century, the Christians triumphed in the city, but the rulers chose not to destroy the Great Mosque due to its undeniable magnificence. Instead, the new Christian rulers built a Cathedral in the center of its archways and columns, giving birth to the intriguing yet glorious church-mosque setting that can still be witnessed today.
